Activities  (Additional information provided by charity)Additional information provided by charity

The Kent Air Ambulance Trust is a registered charity established in 1989 to relieve sick and injured people in South East England and surrounding areas by providing a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and air ambulance service for the benefit of the community. Attending an average 4 incidents every day, Kent Air Ambulance is funded entirely by voluntary donations.

Services (Additional information provided by charity)Additional information provided by charity

  • Attends accidents and medical emergencies in Kent, Surrey, Sussex and surrounding areas.
  • Delivers patients to the nearest Accident and Emergency Department or Specialist Hospital.
  • Undertakes inter-hospital transfers of critcally ill patients.
  • Responding to 999 calls or urgent requests, aims to ensure patients are treated within the crucial 'golden hour'.

Recent accomplishments/awards (Additional information provided by charity)Additional information provided by charity

  • Doctors on Board, September 2005. Following a year long consultation period during which the charity has been seeking the views of its stakeholders and the medical profession in general, Kent Air Ambulance is set to commence a 6 month clinical trial to establish the value in health economic terms of carrying doctors on board the helicopter. Currently patients are transported to the nearest Accident & Emergency Department or relevant specialist hospital. With doctors on board, Air Ambulances will have the ability to give medical treatment at the scene - saving more lives and sparing thousands from serious long term injury.
  • Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Appeals, June 2005. Kent Air Ambulance is to extend its service into Surrey and Sussex, increasing its reach to nearly 4 million people. Accident black-spots such as Flimwell in East Sussex – just a few miles from our base but currently beyond the bureaucratic reach of our airborne paramedics - will soon be covered by the service. A joined-up approach, a wider net and a larger geographical spread surely provides a sensible solution to the lack of equality currently in air ambulance provision in the South East.
  • New Helipad at Canterbury Hospital, October 2005. Kent Air Ambulance reached an agreement with Canterbury Hospital to build a new helipad following the reconfiguration of emergency services last year and closure of the existing helipad. Seriously ill patients will again be able to be flown to specialist hospitals in other parts of the country by Kent Air Ambulance thanks to Canterbury City Council, the first in the County to provide land for a helipad.
  • Chief Executive, David Philpott, one of 4 nominees for Charity Principal of the Year at the UK Charity Awards, September 2005. David Philpott was nominated for the prestigious “Charity Principal of the Year” award at the 6th Annual UK Charity Awards gala dinner, held at The Grosvenor House Hotel, London, on 22 September. Business Development Manager Jill Playle said:
  • Tax Man to hand back £89,803 to Kent Air Ambulance, May 2005. Kent Air Ambulance Chief Executive was been successful in his one-man campaign to get HM Customs & Excise to refund “unethical taxes”. Mr Philpott was campaigning for a year to get the VAT on the cost of pilots on the helicopter zero rated on the grounds that it is a nonsense and in effect a “stealth tax”. He calculates that over the years, the Marden based charity has paid over hundreds of thousands of pounds of donor’s contributions just to keep the VAT man happy. Under the VAT rules, however, the charity can only claim back 3 years payments. The victory for Kent has a knock-on effect across the UK with several other air ambulance charities looking to claim back a total of around half a million pounds.
