Legacies are PDSA’s single most important source of income. In 2005 two out of every three free treatments provided to sick and injured pets by PDSA were funded because someone kindly remembered to include a gift in their will to PDSA. The charity, its pet patients and clients are enormously grateful to everyone who supports our work in this way.

Retail
Sales of donated goods including clothing, books and bric-à-brac, and a selection of new goods through the network of 181 PDSA shops contribute towards the provision of PDSA PetAid services. In 2005 PDSA increased its retail and trading income by 4% and operating margins by 1% despite tough trading condition. Most of PDSA’s 4,800 volunteers work at a PDSA shop.

2005 also saw significant growth in the numbers of PDSA Best Friends, those committed to donate to PDSA on a regular basis, who in return receive a regular copy of Companions magazine. More than 18,000 new PDSA Best Friends were recruited.

PDSA Challenges
In 2006 PDSA fundraising challenges included sponsored treks along the Inca Trail and Hadrian’s Wall, as well as a pony trek in Mongolia. The challenges are designed to be physically and mentally demanding and successfully completing them is a genuine achievement. People of all ages and from all walks of life take part, united in a common cause to aid sick and injured pets. In April 2006 the London Marathon enabled PDSA to raise more than £120,000 through a combination of individual runners’ sponsorship and a mailed appeal.

Hard working volunteers
Volunteers play a major role in PDSA across all directorates, but particularly in fundraising. 2005 was the Year of the Volunteer and the Society attended 'roadshows' around the country to promote this. In recognition of outstanding contributions, nine medals were awarded to PDSA volunteers. At the end of 2005 PDSA had 4,831 active volunteers. A total of 1,198,358 hours were donated by our volunteers, a contribution worth £8.5 million to PDSA.

Young PDSA
Throughout 2005 young people worked hard to support PDSA; nearly 2,000 children joined the PDSA Pet Protectors Club and 53 young people participated in the PDSA PetAid challenge. Pet Protectors raised over £2,495 for PDSA and donated more than 28,000 items to PDSA shops.
