As many as 500,000 people living in the UK have had either viral or bacterial meningitis, and up to one adult in every four knows of someone who has had meningitis. Meningitis can affect anyone, of any age at any time. It strikes in an instant, but its impact can last a lifetime. Those who survive can be left with debilitating after-effects, including brain damage, loss of hearing and sight, and in some cases, where septicaemia (blood poisoning) has occured, loss of limbs.

Specialist support services include a freephone, 24-hour, nurse-led helpline, which received 22,000 calls last year alone; a professional counselling service, home and hospital visits and financial grants, which fund anything from specialist equipment to new treatments and therapies.

The Meningitis Trust is committed to raising awareness of meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia, and in the absence of vaccines for all strains of the disease, raises vital awareness of the signs and symptoms to loo

How to help this charity (Additional information provided by charity)

The Meningitis Trust, the UK's longest established meningitis charity, provides support to anyone who is struggling to cope with the impact of the disease through its range of specialist support services. These include professional counselling, one-to-one contacts, financial grants and a freephone 24-hour nurse-led helpline. The Trust relies entirely on voluntary donations to continue its vital work; raising awareness of meningitis and providing ongoing support to families and individuals who have been traumatised by the disease. It is often not just the person who has had meningitis who needs help; families, friends, colleagues and even whole communities can be affected and may need emotional support, while families caring for a child with disabilities are often fearful of what the future holds.

There are many ways you can help, depending on your interests, available time and your personal goals. Whether it is taking on the challenge of running a marathon or holding a Coffee Break, organising your own fundraising activity or joining in with an event organised by the Trust, giving a regular donation or a one off donation, it all makes a difference. Or perhaps, you would rather volunteer some of your time.

You will find lots of information on our website about how you can help to make a difference at www.meningitis-trust.org. Alternatively, if you would like to talk to someone, please give us a call on 01453 768000.
